Savanna grasslands
This habitat is characterized by coastal sour and mixed
grassland, acacia karroo trees up to 3m and fynbos
elements. Acacias are an asset to birdlife as they produce
plenty of pollen and nectar which attracts countless insects.
These in turn are food for the birds.
Rufous-naped Lark
Larks are a common sight in the grasslands when perched
on low poles or bushes. Calls often end with a whirring of
wings – phrrp
European Roller
The roller and cuckoo are two of our colourful summer
migrants.
Diderick Cuckoo
Secretarybird
They can be seen striding purposefully through grassland,
head down and occasionally stamping the ground to
dislodge prey. If successful, they raise their wings excitedly
then stamp down hard to kill the prey.
The savanna grasslands are also home to Emerald-
spotted Wood-Dove, Chinspot Batis, Southern Black
Tit and Long-tailed Widowbird.
